Unfortunately...no matter which side of the fence you landed on on this one...the "fight" over who is eventually going to "control" Terri Schiavo's fate has been relegated to a power struggle between the branches of our government...
National Review Editors note: Whatever one thinks of the merits of that use of the subpoena power, it seems remarkably high-handed of Judge Greer to flout it. Congressional subpoenas have not heretofore been considered to be subject to the review of state courts — a point which was lost on all the commentators who confidently opined that it was the congressmen who were threatening the separation of powers....
...and I actually think it goes much deeper than that...
...how did we get to a place where - if a spouse is not able to take care of themselves...no matter how deteriotated their condition...it the mate decides that the spouse no longer meets their criteria of 'mate material'...that mate has the right to pull the plug...??...there are many more options...divorce being one of them...
There is a family - a seemingly very loving family - that is ready, willing, and able to take care of the disabled spouse...even if that spouse will never regain many of her faculties...they are willing to take responsibility for her...
...and it doesn't even appear as if that family is asking the former ( or almost former) husband to do anything other than to turn over responsibility for their daughter/sister...
...and, yet, we have people willing to come forward declaring that Terri Schiabo is not worthy to remain alive...
How dare they take that responsibilty?
How dare they assume that their 'opinion' is worth any more than yours...mine...Terri's mother's...?
What is it about the phony liberals?
They like to make a lot of noise about how they are "for" something...anything...name it...
...but when push comes to shove...when it is time to roll up your sleeves and do the work...the REAL work...like caring for a disabled or incompacitated person...
...Well, Then...time to clean out the residue...get that unpleasant, handicapped, incapacitated thing away from my field of vision...for - if it remains - it will undoubtedly remind *ME* of my immortality...
aha! perhaps we just struck a chord!
These are the very same people that are feverishly running around looking for the ever-elusive Fountain of Youth...trying to stave off the signs of the natural aging process...
...and, you know what I think?
I think...that because of their lack of faith...because of their lack of certainty of what will become of them after they 'cross over'...because they don't want to be held to the responsibilty that goes with living a life based on faith...that is why they are so anxious to remove anything and everything that reminds them that...inevitably...they are headed there right along with the rest of us...
That is the only conclusion I can arrive at with all of this...
I have been saying - to myself and to others - "I don't get it"...why are these people so anxious to kill this innocent woman?
Perhaps that is why...they are so uncertain and afraid of their own mortality...
But, that doesn't make it right...and it certainly should reinforce for all of us the need to resist and fight every one of their arguments...
Because, in the end...what happens to Terri Schiavo...will impact the world we live in tomorrow...
And I, for one, am hopeful that her suffering will not be for naught...
